Temperature
The activity of microorganisms causes temperature variations. High temperatures — above 40º C — are essential to maximize the efficiency of the decomposition process, and the cleaning of materials. It is therefore important to periodically measure the temperature, which should be situated between 60º C and 65º C.
If you don't have a thermometer, just insert an iron pipe into the compost pile and wait a few minutes. If the iron bar becomes hot but not burning, the temperature is just right.
If the temperature is too high, turn over the biowaste and add green waste. You can also reduce the size of the stack.
If the temperature is too low, it might be because the pile is too small, so add green and brown waste, add water and turn the layers.
